What each system is
PP-R (polypropylene random copolymer)
PP-R is the plastic system that dominates modern Malaysian building plumbing for hot and cold potable water. Pipes and fittings are joined by heat fusion — a socket welder melts the pipe and fitting together into one continuous joint with no seal ring to leak. It is corrosion-free, quick to install, and light.
PP-R piping for hot and cold water is made to ISO 15874, and each system carries a pressure/temperature class — the operating envelope the pipe is rated for. That class is not a generic “hot water OK” stamp: pick the class your riser or branch actually needs and confirm it with the system supplier. Two practical limits to plan around: PP-R expands more than metal with temperature, so long exposed runs need proper expansion loops and support spacing, and PP-R must not be left exposed to UV in the sun.
Copper
Copper tube is the premium, long-record answer for hot water — used for decades in the highest-temperature services, strong, and biostatic. It is supplied to copper tube standards such as BS EN 1057 and joined by compression fittings, soldering/brazing, or press systems depending on the site.
Copper suits exposed and refurbishment work where the pipe is seen and must look right and last, and where small-bore runs need to be neat. The trade-offs are cost and skill: copper tube and fittings are more expensive than PP-R, and the jointing method has to be done properly — the flux, heat, and jointing discipline are what keep a soldered system leak-free.
Stainless steel
Stainless steel press systems (304/316 pipe with press-fit fittings) are the commercial and plant-room answer: corrosion resistance across aggressive water chemistries, thin walls carrying high flow, and fast, repeatable press joints. Cost is the highest of the three, so stainless is usually justified where corrosion, longevity, and reliability in a critical plant outweigh the price.

Malaysian context: certification and inspection
For internal water services, consultants and local authorities increasingly check that potable plastics carry SIRIM certification — non-certified pipe can be rejected at inspection. The same logic applies to hot water: on a certified building, buy the certified system, not the closest lookalike.
Two site realities to plan around:
- Fittings and tools must match the pipe. Fusion systems, press systems, and clamp-ring systems are not interchangeable between brands. Buying pipe from one supplier and fittings from another is how leaks happen at the exact joint nobody can reach.
- Thermal expansion is a design input, not an afterthought. Long straight hot-water runs in any material need support spacing and expansion provision — worst in PP-R, but copper and stainless also move with temperature.
- System class confirmed (pressure/temperature) for PP-R where used.
- SIRIM certification checked for potable lines on inspected projects.
