What PN and SDR actually mean
- PN (Pressure Nominal) — the pipe’s rated continuous internal pressure in bar at 20°C. PN16 = 16 bar ≈ 1,600 kPa. Ratings de-rate at higher fluid temperatures (relevant for plant rooms, not buried water mains).
- SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) — outside diameter ÷ minimum wall thickness. Lower SDR = relatively thicker wall = higher pressure capacity. For PE100: PN16 ↔ SDR11, PN10 ↔ SDR17 (standard relationships).
- PE100 vs PE80 — the material grade. PE100 has a minimum required strength of 10.0 MPa, letting a thinner wall carry the same pressure as a thicker PE80 pipe. Modern waterworks spec PE100 almost exclusively.
Because HDPE is dimensioned by outside diameter, a PN10 and PN16 pipe of the same OD have the same external footprint — only the bore differs. That matters when you are matching fittings, saddles, or an existing network.
Selection factors for Malaysian projects
1. Operating and surge pressure. Sum static head, pump shut-off, and surge allowance. If the worst case approaches 10 bar, PN16 is the safe specification — surge events are exactly when the margin matters.
2. Depth of cover and traffic loading. Shallow mains under roads or heavy vehicles are sometimes upgraded one PN class for structural margin, per the designer’s calculation — plastics are pressure vessels, but they are also buried structures.
3. Authority and consultant acceptance. Water authority materials schedules name the accepted pipe classes. Submittal deviation costs more than the pipe saving.
4. Fitting and joint compatibility. Compression fittings, electrofusion couplers, and saddles are PN-rated too — the system rating is the lowest component rating, not the pipe’s.
5. Cost structure. PN16/SDR11 uses roughly 1.5× the material of PN10/ SDR17 per metre at the same OD, so the price gap is material-driven. On long rural mains, PN10 on gravity or low-pressure reaches is the economical layout; PN16 on pump discharge and high zones.
Worked example (PE100, 50 mm OD)
From the Hansen PE100 published data: 50 mm OD in PN16/SDR11 has a wall of 4.6–5.2 mm at 0.669 kg/m. The same OD in PN10/SDR17 would be a thinner wall (consult the manufacturer’s schedule for the exact figure) at a lower kg/m — which is why PN10 is cheaper per metre, and also why it cannot be substituted on a PN16 spec line.
