The loading class is the non-negotiable

MS EN 124 groups manhole covers and gully tops into loading classes for the traffic they sit in. Each class is a tested rating, and the groups map to where the cover is installed:

The figures behind each class are defined in the standard text — do not guess a class from how a cover looks. Your project specification (or the consultant) states the class and the clear opening size; order covers to that, and confirm with the authority where public sewerage or roads are involved (IWK, local authority, or JKR on municipal works).

Ductile iron: the heavy-duty default

Ductile iron (DI) covers are the workhorse where vehicles pass. Cast iron’s toughness takes impact and repeated wheel loads without cracking, and DI is stronger and less brittle than traditional grey iron.

Where DI earns its keep:

  • Roads, carriageways, and heavy-traffic classes (D400 and above).
  • Sites where impact — kerbing, plant, dropped loads — is a real risk.
  • Long service life in demanding locations.

The trade-offs are real too. DI covers are heavy — two people and lifting kit on the big sizes — and the metal has scrap value, so unlocked covers in unsecured locations can walk. Specify lockable or bolt-down options for public and unattended sites.

Composite covers: light, corrosion-proof, theft-proof

Composite covers (glass-reinforced plastic / polymer concrete and similar) trade sheer load capacity for a different set of strengths:

  • Light enough for one person to handle, which changes site productivity and safety on a job with hundreds of chambers.
  • No scrap-metal value — the theft problem disappears.
  • Non-conductive and corrosion-resistant, which suits utilities, treatment areas, and environments with chemical or salt exposure.
  • Available in pigmented colours and with custom legends.

The limit is loading. Composite covers sit in the pedestrian-to-light-vehicle classes and are the usual choice for footpaths, parks, landscape, and utility chambers off the carriageway. If the class is C250 or above and the traffic is real, read the manufacturer’s rating carefully before substituting composite for ductile iron.

Security and the small details that matter

The cover is bought as a cover + frame set, and the set should match — mixing a manufacturer’s cover with another maker’s frame causes rocking and noise, and eventually a broken edge. On public and unattended chambers, choose:

  • Lockable covers with a proprietary key or bolt-down fixing.
  • Rubber-seated or gasketed options where smell, water ingress, or rattle is a concern (common on sewerage chambers).
  • A clear-opening size that actually fits the chamber ring and the access the maintenance crew needs.
  • Loading class and clear opening taken from the project specification.
  • Cover + frame supplied as a matched set.
  • Lockable / bolt-down specified for public or unattended chambers.
  • Corrosion and chemical environment considered in material choice.
  • Frame bedded level and firmly on the chamber ring.
  • Class confirmed with the authority on public roads or sewerage work.
